Victim’s Family Hopes Her Eyes can Help Her Daughter See Again

The Indian Express - Delhi, Wednesday, March 20, 2019

Krishna said he regrets sending Poonam back to Delhi after celebrating bhai dooj in Bhiwadi. "I should have asked her to stay back, but she left soon after meeting her brother in the evening.

“Although I have lost my daughter, she will live through her daughter’s eyes,” said Poonam Sardana’s father Lila Krishna, a day after her death in a car accident.

According to the family, Poonam’s 13-year-old daughter Chaitanya lost her eyesight in the accident — but the family hopes her mother’s eyes can help save her future.

“We have asked doctors to preserve her (Poonam’s) eyes, so Chaitanya can see the world again. Chaitanya lost her vision because shards of glass hit her face during the accident. She is still in the ICU and doctors say she will have to undergo multiple surgeries. Doctors also told us that her eardrum is damaged,” said Krishna, who came to the capital from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan following the accident.

Krishna said he regrets sending Poonam back to Delhi after celebrating bhai dooj in Bhiwadi. “I should have asked her to stay back, but she left soon after meeting her brother in the evening. At night, I got to know about the accident,” said Krishna, who has another daughter and a son.

Poonam, who studied MBA, ran a boutique at the ground floor of the Adarsh Nagar home where she stayed with her husband Vimal Sardana, who runs a garment business, and their two children. “Chaitanya studies in Class V, she is a brave child,” said Vimal’s elder brother Vikram.

“Poonam was always cheerful… Vimal is yet to come to terms with the loss,” he added.

Vikram claimed police had arrested the accused only after the victim’s family protested outside the station. The DCP denied these claims.
